90% of the world’s camels are single-humped and 9.6% are double-humped. China’s northern Gobi, Mongolia, Kalmykia, Khasag and Khirgis breeds double-humped camels. Mongolia is the first country where camels were first domesticated and bred 3,000 years ago, and one of the few countries in the world that has preserved the pedigree of camels, which is rare in the world.
Mongolia has the largest number of two-humped camels in the world. According to the 2020 livestock census, the number of camels reached 473 thousand. The ancestor of the double-humped camel is the “khavtgai” wild camel. This animal still lives in the Gobi beyond the Altai of our country.

Camel wool protects camels from the cold winter weather and has heat-balancing properties that keep them cool in the summer heat. Camel wool is a kind of cloth made from camels’ coats. This form of fabric is more generally known as camel fur, and it is usually obtained from the Bactrian camel subspecies. The camel hair derived from the Bactrian camel consists of two separate portions: The guard hair and the undercoat. The guard hair is hard and coarse, and it doesn’t make very good fabric unless it is mixed with another substance like sheep wool. The undercoat is quite soft, and it is used by Bactrian camels much in the same way that fiberglass insulation is used between the inner and outer walls of houses. While the guard coat may be used to make certain types of textiles, the undercoat is the portion of the Bactrian camel’s hair that is most commonly used to make apparel.
While most forms of wool are obtained by shearing animal hairs, Bactrian camels shed their winter coats spontaneously every season, making harvesting this form of fur a sustainable and cruelty-free factory process. (The camel wool is collected not by shearing or plucking but gathered as the animal sheds its coat.)
Camel wool is classified into three categories: Only the finest undercoat fibers can be considered genuinely high-grade. The most popular camel wool fibers used in consumer textiles are high-grade camel wool fibers. Medium-grade undercoat fabers are those that aren’t called high-grade, and while they can be used to produce clothes, the garments manufactured from medium-grade fibers are rougher to the touch. Finally, low-grade camel hair fibers are usually obtained from the guard coat, and these coarse, inflexible fibers are only suitable for carpets and other stiff textiles.
Camel wool fibre is finer than most sheep wool, making it often feel just as soft as cashmere. Camels’ fur is thermo-regulated, keeping them warm in the cold and cool in the heat; when mixed with other fibers, this results in a warm and breathable cotton.
