The Parliament of Mongolia is referred to as the State Great Khural, which is the highest organ of state power. The Parliament consists of 76 members appointed for a term of 4 years. Presidential election is held the next year of the parliament election. The President is the head of state, commander-in-chief of the armed forces and head of the National Security Council.

Since the early 1990s Mongolia has two main government parties, which are the Democratic Party (DP) the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP). The MPRP—which in November 2010 decided to revert to its original Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) name—has the largest party membership and traditionally draws its support from the countryside. The main opposition party, the Democratic Party (DP), was formed in 2000 through the amalgamation of a number of smaller parties. There also other small parties which have few seats in the State Great Khural.

In June 2021 the most recent presidential election was held and the position was taken over by the opponent leader of Khurelsukh Ukhnaa from MPP.

Parliamentary elections were held in Mongolia on 24 June 2020. The result was a victory for the ruling Mongolian People’s Party, which won 62 of the 76 seats, a slight decrease from the 65 won in the 2016 elections. The Mongolian Parliament chose Khurelsukh Ukhnaa of the MPP as a Prime Minister and appointed to new cabinet. Zandanshatar Gombojav was elected as a new Parliament speaker with 95.2 percent of votes from Parliament members of Mongolia.
