If you plan to use the house in a humid climate, put the breathing house wrap between felt layer & canvas layer.

Ger yurt structure

The Mongolian ger is divided into two parts. The first portion is made of wood, and the second is made of felt.

1.Wooden parts

The yurt’s most sacred element, linking the earth and the heavens! The toono is the wooden round part that ties the yurt together.

Uni is a long & narrow piece of wood used to connect toono and walls. The number uni depending on the size of the home.

The size of a Mongolian ger is the number of walls. So what is the wall? The ger is round. The wall is a vertical wall of the ger that can be folded and extended and connected to the next wall by a rope. See below pictures.

The door is the only entrance to the ger and in Mongolia it always faces south. The walls are fastened on both sides of the door. The upper part of the door is fastened by uni with a number.

2.Felts & covers

The felt part is the white felt of Erdenet, the largest carpet factory in Mongolia. This felt is more dense, odorless and more expensive. Some traditional handmade felts smell like bit strange smell after the heavy rain.

There is rain protection cover on the felt cover. It is Russian made heavy duty canvas.

There is a white coating on the top of the canvas or on the outside. In addition to the effects of the sun and wind, the white coating may be replaced every 3 years.

The toono cover is a square felt blanket at the top of the toono (at the top of the ger). When it rains or snows, the toono cover is pulled forward and closed.

FAQs

Here are the questions our customers ask us the most. The best accommodation for nomadic life is a ger. It is structurally very interesting.

We Mongolians can use a ger for decades. When a young couple gets married, the husband’s parents prepare a new ger for them as wedding dowry. The couple uses that ger for whole life. So you can use the purchased ger for the rest of your life. With a little care, wood composites and felt insulation can be used for decades. If, after a few years, there is a problem with the outer fabric canvas, you have to change it. You can contact to us or you can embroider where you are since it is not very hard to do.

Because the ger is made by hand, there is no factory warranty. We inspect and accept every ger from the manufacturer. The every ger is built and inspected before shipment. The wooden part of the house is not easily broken because it is wood cleaving technique. It is an ancient technique used in carpentry to make lumber for making wooden objects of the ger.

The ger was developed in the most extreme climatic conditioned country on the planet. Its short and round shape helps it stand in strong wind and earthquakes. Also if the outer skirt is tied up during flood, a ger can persist and not be moved by flood water because the walls are settled on the ground. Мut when there is a strong wind, Mongolian people hang heavy objects  from the ger toono. A good quality ger can withstand a lot of snow. However, it is better to clean the roof snow, as the heat from the inside will melt the snow on the roof of the ger.

We will provide home water protection with Russian heavy duty canvas. This is a very good quality material. If it rains for a long time or the snow melts slowly, you may get wet spots here and there. We recommend that you light a small fire to remove moisture from it.

The toono is the only opening, through which light penetrates the ger. Our tonoos (central domes) are all equipped on their front half with 4 window frames covered with a very basic clear vinyl cover (one of them having a hole for the stove pipe). The door we can make a window if you wish. The crown wheel has a small glass window and a hole for chimney. The size of a ger can be equalized by the flexibility of its lattice walls. Mongolian ger is the result of more than 3,000 years of development and adjustment. I would mention that installing windows in a Mongolian ger can affect the insulation and it may cause a water leakage.

Minor work is required, such as periodically tightening the belt and pressing the outer sheath down. If you don’t use your ger for many months, you can easily take it down and store it. It is very helpful its aging. We will always provide you with the information you need. You can get instructions and advice from us. If you do not use the ger for a few weeks, it is recommended to leave it to rotate the air.

Felt cover is made of 100% sheep wool. Moths, which cause problems in carpets, do not cause problems in felt. It is impossible to nest in felt. No one knows why. If you put mosquito nets on the doors and windows, flying insects will not be able to enter the house. It may be possible for insects to enter the bottom part of the ger, but we will also send you a mesh net against it. This house is actually included.

Mongolians build summer gers without a platform. Мut the winter ger is built on a platform. If you are going to build a temporary ger, there is no problem in building without a platform. Мut you have to pay a little attention to the moisture content of the background of the lower part of the ger. There is no other problem. If you do not want to move the ger for a long time, you need a ger platform. You can make a ger platform out of anything. Bricks, cement and wood. What you need to pay attention to is that rainwater can flow out from the ger platform. Here is some examples of the ger foundation in Mongolia.

In Mongolia, two people build a ger in two hours. This is difficult in foreign countries, especially for those who have never built a Mongolian ger before. For the first time, you may need someone to help you. We will give you detailed instructions. Video file and photo tutorial. The next method is to send a Mongolian who can build you a ger. We may look for such a person and ask him to help us.

Of course you can. Mongolia has a very hot summer and a very cold winter. Mongolia has a harsh continental climate. Even today, most Mongolians live in gers. Most people live in gers, both in rural and urban areas. So you too can live at home in the winter. To do this, you need to overlap the felt cover. When ordering a ger you need to get additional felt from us. The fire ger is very warm in winter. In just a few minutes, the ger heats up very quickly. You can keep the ger warm using an electric stove, underfloor heating or a stove. The chimney of the stove goes out by the toono of the ger.

There is a huge difference between the authentic Mongolian ger and the modern versions in North America.
