The horsehead fiddle, or morin khuur, is a traditional Mongolian bowed stringed instrument. It is considered an emblem of Mongolian nationhood and is one of the most important musical instruments of the Mongol people. The morin khuur is one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity identified by UNESCO.
The design of the Morin Khuur is closely linked to the all-important cult of the horse. The hollow trapezoid-shaped body of the instrument is connected to a long fretless neck with a carved horse head at one end. Two tuning pegs jut out like ears from either side of the neck just below the head. The strings and bow are made of horsehair, and the soundboard is coated in animal skin.

The instrument’s characteristic sound is produced by sliding or stroking the bow against the two strings. Multiple right-hand stroking and a variation of left-hand fingering are common techniques. It is mainly played in solo fashion but sometimes accompanies dances, long songs (urtiin duu), mythical tales, ceremonies and everyday tasks related to horses. To this day, the morin khuur repertory has retained some tunes (tatlaga) specifically intended to tame animals. Owing to the simultaneous presence of a main tone and overtones, morin khuur music has always been difficult to transcribe using standard notation. For several centuries, it has been passed on orally from master to apprentice.
Morin khuur has been the main musical instrument in Mongolian song, fiddle and dance festivals since its inception. To give just one example, there is no possibility that the performance of the Western Mongolian people can be accomplished without a horse fiddle.
The Morin Khuur bow is very important. In the past, the bow was made of wood such as willow, birch etc.
